The short version
- The tools are free, and provided as they are.
- Only test systems that are yours or that you have permission to test.
- Use the tools at the pace a person would, rather than sending automated or bulk queries.
- Results are information, not guarantees. Location data is approximate and sample output is labeled as sample.
What the site provides
Gate46 offers network tools: it shows your public IP address and lets you look up addresses, DNS records and registration data, and run checks such as ping, traceroute and port tests. The about page explains how each tool gets its answer. No account is needed and there is no charge.
We may change, add, suspend or withdraw any tool at any time, and we do not promise that the site or any tool will always be available.
Acceptable use
Several tools send traffic to a system you name. Running them against someone else's system without permission can be unlawful where you live, and it is not allowed here.
- Test only what you own or are authorised to test. This applies to ping, traceroute, the port checker, the blacklist check and HTTP headers. Looking up public records, such as DNS or registration data, for any domain is fine.
- No automated or bulk querying. Do not use scripts, bots, scrapers or scheduled jobs against the site, the tools or the probe server, and do not use the site as a backend for your own service.
- Respect the limits. The tools apply limits to keep them available to everyone, for example the port checker tests up to ten ports per check, and requests are rate limited. Do not try to get around a limit. We may slow down or block addresses that exceed them.
- Do not attack or disrupt. Do not use the tools to scan, map or probe systems in preparation for an attack, to harass anyone, or to interfere with the site, its servers or the services it relies on.
- Follow the law. You are responsible for making sure your use of the tools is lawful where you are and where the system you test is.
We may restrict or block access for anyone who breaks these rules. You are responsible for how you use the tools, including any test you run against a system.
Accuracy of results
We work to make the tools correct and to say plainly what a result means. Even so, the results are provided for information only, without any warranty that they are accurate, complete or current.
- Geolocation is approximate. The location shown for an IP address comes from a third-party database. It is city level at best and often shows the internet provider's hub. It must not be used to identify where a person is.
- Sample output is not a measurement. When the probe server is not connected, ping, traceroute, the port checker, the blacklist check and HTTP headers show illustrative output. It is always labeled as sample. Do not rely on it.
- DNS and registration data can be out of date or incomplete. Resolvers cache answers, and registries redact many contact details.
- A check is a snapshot. A port that shows closed, or an address that is on no blocklist, was so at that moment from our vantage point. It does not prove that a system is secure.
Do not rely on the tools alone for security, legal, safety or business-critical decisions. Confirm anything important with your own testing or a qualified professional.
Third-party services
Many tools get their answers from public services that we do not operate, including address detection endpoints, a geolocation provider, DNS-over-HTTPS resolvers and RDAP servers. The privacy policy names them. These services can be slow, rate limited, unavailable or changed without notice, and their own terms apply to the requests your browser sends them. We are not responsible for their content or availability.

Advertising
The site does not currently show advertising. If that changes, ads will be labeled "Advertisement" and kept apart from tool controls and results, we will not pick individual ads or endorse what they promote, and this page and the privacy policy will be updated first.
Content and copying
The text, design and code of this site belong to the operator or its licensors. You may link to any page, quote short passages with a link back, and use the results of your own lookups however you like. You may not copy the site or substantial parts of it, or present its tools as your own.
Limits on our liability
The site is provided "as is" and "as available". To the fullest extent the law allows, we exclude all implied warranties, including fitness for a particular purpose.
To the fullest extent the law allows, we are not liable for any indirect or consequential loss, or for loss of data, profit, revenue or business, arising from your use of the site, from being unable to use it, or from relying on a result. Because the site is free, our total liability to you for any claim connected with it is limited to the greatest extent the law permits.
Nothing in these terms excludes or limits liability that cannot be excluded or limited by law, such as liability for fraud, or for death or personal injury caused by negligence. If you are a consumer, you keep the rights that the law of your country gives you and that cannot be signed away.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of [jurisdiction], and the courts of [jurisdiction] have jurisdiction over any dispute about them.
